Czech utility buys German coal-fired power plant

Save It Saved

Czech utility Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH) is set to acquire a German coal-fired power plant after signing a contract at the weekend.

Through its subsidiary EP Power Europe, EPH will acquire a majority stake in the 752 MW Mehrum plant in the town of Mehrum in Lower Saxony.

The subcritical plant was commissioned in 1979 and was owned by E.ON until 2009, when it was sold to SWS Stadtwerke Schoenbeck GmbH. Two units have been decommissioned but the third is still operational.

The deal is subject to German merger clearance and is expected to close by the end of October.

In a press statement, EPH said it will assume control of the plant’s operations within the next few weeks.

EPH operates power plants in the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Germany, Italy, the UK and Hungary and is Europe’s seventh largest power producer.
