Southern Cold Creates Record Winter Demand at ERCOT

Save It Saved

By Editors of Power Engineering

The extreme winter weather that brought frigid temperatures and snow to Texas caused ERCOT to set multiple new winter peak demand records.

ERCOT noted demand reached 65,731 MW between 7 and 8 a.m. January 17, significantly higher than the previous record of 62,855 MW set earlier in January.

Officials said ERCOT had sufficient generation and transmission resources to keep up with the boosted demand.
