Rocky Mountain Institute: Reimagining the Utility

Save It Saved

The electricity sector contributes roughly one-third of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and requires deep decarbonization to achieve global climate change mitigation requirements.

Meanwhile, electricity is likely to become more central to the economy and to other energy sectors, including for electrification of transport and heating. This evolution is made possible by new technologies for electricity generation and energy management, marked by improving performance capabilities and rapid cost declines, reads a new report by RMI.

This report is focused on changes at the distribution grid, and offers possibilities for innovation on that part. New roles can offer ways to re-orient a utility’s business, RMI noted. These could include retail competition, market hosting and trusted advisor duties.
