Finning installs backup power system for UK data centre

Save It Saved

Caterpillar dealer Finning has installed a backup power system for a data centre expansion project in the UK.

The firm won the contract to supply standby diesel gensets for the second phase of data centre design and construction firm Ark’s development at Spring Park in Wiltshire.

The contract with principal contractor the JCA Group included supply, installation and commissioning of two Cat C18 700 kVA generators, two fuel tanks, control system and integrated systems testing.

The gensets are configured in an N+1 arrangement where, in the event of mains failure, both units will start up and share the load, Finning said, with a combined 72 hours of capacity at full load. Each genset is mounted on top of its fuel tank in order to save space.

The data centre uses a range of energy-efficient technologies to meet stringent environmental targets, Finning said.  Equally important is its compliance with Tier 3 design resilience, which means the site must have a power availability of at least 99.98 per cent.
