BayWa r.e. expands renewables O&M offering with Italian acquisition

Save It Saved

German renewables outfit BayWa r.e. has acquired Italian power distribution equipment and service company Energy Systems Services (ESS).

ESS supplies, services and repairs low and medium voltage switchgear, circuit breakers and replacement parts for Italy’s power distribution sector.

The acquisition puts BayWa r.e. in the lead as the country’s largest service provider, it said.

Francesco Paolo Liuzzi, a former managing director with wind OEM Nordex’s Italian arm, will be managing director of ESS, working with the firm’s founders.

The move follows BayWa r.e.’s January acquisition of a standalone O&M business from UK-based solar services firm Green Hedge Operational Services.

Alessandra Toschi, managing director at BayWa r.e. Italia, said the latest move means BayWa r.e. “is able to provide a broader range of services, with extensive capabilities in windfarm operations and maintenance, as well as in HV/MV substations. ESS also has significant experience in the design and construction of civil and electrical works.”

Tobias Bittkau, global head of operation services, added that the firm’s offerings include new maintenance techniques such as drones with thermal imaging, advanced data analysis and increasing digitalization.

“We see asset owners preferring to partner with single providers who can meet all their needs across portfolios,” he said.

Munich-headquartered BayWa r.e. includes solar, wind, bioenergy and geothermal business units. The firm said it has recently expanded its services business into Australia, Africa and Central America.
