Nuclear Outages Fell This Summer

Save It Saved

By Editors of Power Engineering

A new report by the Energy Information Administration indicated U.S. power plant outages averaged 4.6 GW this summer, or 10 percent lower than last summer.

Though the majority of outages were for inspections, refueling or maintenance, two unscheduled outages were reported. Watts Bar Unit 2 shut down due to a steam condenser failure on March 23 and came back online August 11. Comanche Peak Unit 2 shut down from June 5 to August 15 to perform repairs to its main generator.

Additionally, Hurricane Irma lead to outages at Turkey Point and St. Lucie, though both came back online by September 18.
