MAN launches 26 MW diesel engine

MAN Diesel & Turbo has announced the release of its newest diesel-fired engine, with an output of 26 MW.

The 20V45/60 joins the Germany-based company’s 4x engine range, expanding its performance by over 4 MW. MAN said the new engine is geared towards an increasingly decentralized energy landscape and the accompanying need for flexibility in thermal power applications. 

Wayne Jones, MAN’s chief sales officer, said the engine’s output “is unprecedented – this is the most powerful four-stroke engine in the market.”

Along with its increased output, MAN said the new engine offers a fuel efficiency of over 50 per cent.

Dr Gunnar Stiesch, Head of Engineering Engines, said his team had used computational fluid dynamics to optimize the engine’s combustion process, and finite elements analysis to optimize its mechanical strength and vibration behaviour.

“We then put the power unit to the test on the world’s largest four-stroke, single-cylinder test bed and started the experimental optimization and validation phase.” 

According to the company, the engine is a good fit for baseload as well as peak-shaving applications, and for decentralized power generation in remote locations and islands where there is no gas supply.

MAN said the engine was designed for climatically demanding sites, with its two-stage turbocharging preventing derating at 2500 metres above sea level and no decrease in output at ambient temperatures up to 53°C.

Alexander Stöckler, global head of sales for MAN’s power plants business, said operational flexibility “has become essential for power plant operators these days. State-of-the-art plants need to be able to master repeated and rapid startups and the ability for load-following operation.

“The 45/60 reaches full load in a short time, effortlessly handles load reversals, and allows for high fuel-efficiency even when operated in partial load.”

Gas-fired and dual-fuel versions of the engine are currently under development, MAN said, as is integrated selective catalytic reduction (SCR) which the company said will further reduce the engine’s NOx emissions by up to 80 per cent. In terms of emissions, MAN said the engine meets World Bank 2 (2007/2008) emission standard for heavy fuel oil (HFO), marine gas oil (MGO) and marine diesel oil (MDO).

The engine features the firm’s latest Sa-CoS 5000 digital control system, which MAN said was based on a decentralized energy concept and was designed to address the growing complexity of modern four-stroke engines.

Audi Lucas, the company’s chief digital officer, said the new control system is “a key element of our digitization strategy and enables a new line of digital solutions which will be available from the year 2018 on”.

The system’s security design features both active and passive defences and is planned to be continually upgraded to ensure that the system evolves as needs change. These upgrades will also allow hybrid local and cloud-based analytics across a customer’s fleet, and will offer increased data availability and optimized alarm visualization and diagnosis.
